MSP 3.2 Estimating Durations

Estimating Durations

MS Project makes calculation based on the following formula:

DURATION = WORK / ASSIGNMENT UNITS

So, if a resource can complete a task by working for 8hrs. full time, i.e. 100% on a task its duration is 8 hrs. If the resource works only half day, i.e . 50%, the task duration becomes 16 hrs.

DURATION

WORK

ASSIGNMENT UNITS

8 hrs.

8 hrs.

1 (100%)

16 hrs.

8 hrs.

0.5 (50%)

We can fix any one parameter for the project while scheduling:

  • Fixed Duration
  • Fixed Work
  • Fixed Units

When one parameter is fixed and we enter or change another, the third gets calculated automatically.
