How To Manipulate a Photo In Adobe Photoshop CS4 With Simple Lighting Techniques

Hey guys . . . another tutorial here. ;) This time I’m going to show you how to manipulate lighting in photos using Adobe Photoshop CS4. I’m also going to create a cool ghosting effect.

Download the original image here

Step 1

Select the pen tool (path not shape) and make selection points around the body leaving an inch between the subject and the outline. Curve where necessary.

Step 2

Right click on the path and select “Make Selection” — enter a feather radius of 1.

Step 3

Hit “CTRL + C” (Cmd + C for Mac) to copy the selection and “CTRL + V” (Cmd + V for Mac) to paste the selection. Rename the new layer it created to “double”

Step 4

Select the dodge tool, hold “Shift” and stroke it across the background layer until you’re satisfied. Doing this will enhance the background lighting.

Step 5

In the layers panel, next to opacity, there should be a drop down selector. Select the “double” layer and change the drop down menu from Normal to Multiply.

Step 6

Select the dodge tool again and stroke it across the subject until you have something like this. If you’re ever unsatisfied with the lighting you could just undo or use the burn tool to make corrections.

Step 7

Duplicate the double layer (right click it and select Duplicate Layer), rename it to “double 2″ and in the drop down box next to opacity select Soft Light instead of normal.

I encourage you to play with this. I also liked dissolve. :)

Step 8

I added a line pattern and changed the opacity of the pattern to 3%. You can download the pattern pack I used here

&

As you can see it’s subtle but effective.

Step 9

At this point It’s just a matter of making it your own. You could also change the hue if you like. “Ctrl + U” (Cmd + U for Mac) make sure to select “colorize”

This is what I came up with.

:) I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
