Conflict Management

Like it or not, conflicts are part of our everyday lives. I do not think there is someone who is not familiar with conflicts. These happen all around us, at the workplace, at school, at home, on the street etc. Some conflicts are easy to be dealt with and some are not. Most likely, these occur when two or more people can not reach to an agreement, despite their first attempts to do so.

Many people wonder how to deal with conflicts but first of all let’s see when conflicts can occur.

What causes conflicts?

•A discomfort or fear from being rejected

•Threatened values or perspectives

•A disagreement with yourself or with others

Conflict is often something that people can take advantage of, but this depends on the conflict management.

Types of managerial actions that can cause conflicts at a workplace

1. Poor communication

The lack of communication between employers and the employees can lead to conflicts, mostly because employees are not informed of major decisions that can affect their workplace or even lives.

Not being taken into consideration and not being part of the decision-making can cause employees to resign and look for another job.

2. An unfair or insufficient amount of resources

This can cause a chaos in which the employees are wondering “who does what?”

And “what is the amount of work I am supposed to do in a certain period of time?”

3. Leaderships problems

Sometimes the heart of the problem is the leader which seems to be either too bossy or not informed at all. Employees face the same problems at the workplace and often feel that they are misunderstood or looked down at.

4. Tensions between members of a team

There are mostly not noticeable and none of the members seems to be aware of how much harm there tensions can cause. If approached in an effective manner it can lead to a higher productivity and a strong relationship of the team.

Conflict management, ways people deal with conflicts.

Conflicts can be dealt with in many ways. Every conflicted should be approached in a different way, depending on the current situation and on the nature of the conflict.

1. Accommodating the conflict

This approach of conflict management can be used whenever the conflict is not of big importance and you know for sure it can be dealt with later, using a much more appropriate approach.

2. Avoiding the conflict

Ignoring the conflict or simply pretending the conflict does not exist. People can use this approach when the conflict is meaningless and it is pointless to argue over it. Be aware it can worsen over time and lead to another conflict.

3. Compromise

People can reach to a common agreement in which both have nothing to lose. It’s a win-win. This is a mature way of dealing with conflicts.

4. Collaborate

If everyone does what he/she has to do then all the persons involved in the conflict are working together to solving the conflict and this can also lead to mutual respect.

Conflict management is something we all have to deal with, but finding the best approach leads to a relaxed relationship at the workplace or wherever the conflicts occur.
