Choose the Right Roof for Your Home

Most of us don’t spend a great deal of time thinking about the roof over our heads. It is easy just to take it for granted and not think about how well suited it is to the job that it is doing and how big an impact it makes on the overall appearance of a home. So when you do have to make a decision about a new roof, perhaps when you are building a new home, it is difficult to know where to start. Choosing the right roof material is an important decision though, both practically and aesthetically. Here’s our guide to your roof tiling options:

Tile roofing

Tiles are another good option. Traditionally a terra cotta product, they can also be made from concrete. They provide a sturdy option that should last the life of the house, needing little or no maintenance. They are available in a variety of styles and colours. Traditional clay tiles can be quite expensive and installation can be quite complicated. As these shingles are relatively heavy it is vital to establish that the building is sufficiently strongly built to take the weight.

Slate

Slate roof tiles are a premium product and a very attractive one too. They are extremely durable and under normal circumstances you would expect a slate roof to last as long as the house. Slate requires very low maintenance (unless it is physically damaged) and specialised installation. The effect is stunning though so it can be well worth it.

Cedar shingles

Another option is to go with wood. Cedar shingles or ‘shakes’ are expensive and require a lot of maintenance, but provide a beautiful natural look. If they are well maintained cedar shingles will last a long time and can be easily repaired or replaced. They are not a good idea if you live in an area with a high fire risk.

Metal roof

If you live in an area with a high snowfall, metal might be a good idea. Metal roofing allow snow to slip off easily rather than collecting until it reaches dangerous or destructive quantities.

As you can see there are plenty of options to choose from to cater for all tastes, budgets and needs. Don’t underestimate the significance of the roofing when you are designing your new home. The roof can take up as much as fifty percent of the exterior view. Getting it right will not only ensure a safe haven for your family but will also significantly boost your home’s kerb appeal.
